What are cookies?

Cookies are text strings that websites visited by users (so-called Publishers, or “first parties”) or different sites or web servers (so-called “third parties”) place and store within the user's terminal device, to be retransmitted to the same sites on the next visit. *

What are they used for?

Cookies are used for different purposes: performing computer authentications, session monitoring, storing information on specific configurations concerning users accessing the server, storing preferences, or facilitating the use of online content, such as keeping track of items in a shopping cart or information for filling out an online form, etc.; but they can also be used to profile the user, i.e., to “observe” their behaviors, for example, in order to send targeted advertising, measure the effectiveness of the advertising message, and adopt consequent commercial strategies. In this case, they are called profiling cookies. *

TECHNICAL COOKIES

They are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and for navigation; without them, you might not be able to view pages correctly or use some services. For example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user logged in throughout the visit to a website or to store language settings, display settings, and so on.

They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or manager of the website.

For the installation of such cookies, prior consent from users is not required.

These cookies are divided into:

  1. Essential cookies, strictly necessary for the functioning of the Site. Without the use of such cookies, some parts of the Site would not work. They include, for example, cookies that allow access to protected areas of the Site. These cookies do not collect information for marketing purposes and cannot be disabled;
  2. Session cookies, which are deleted immediately upon closing the browsing browser;
  3. Persistent cookies, which - unlike session cookies - remain within the browser for a certain period of time. They are used, for example, to recognize the device that connects to the site, facilitating authentication operations for the user;
  4. Analytical cookies, assimilated to technical cookies when used directly by the site manager to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site itself;
  5. Functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, the language, the products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the same.

PROFILING COOKIES

These cookies are responsible for profiling the user and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during their navigation.

THIRD-PARTY COOKIES

They are generated and managed by entities other than the manager of the website on which the user is browsing (usually, based on a contract between the website owner and the third party).

Are analytical cookies technical cookies?

Analytics can be assimilated to technical cookies if used for site optimization purposes directly by the site owner, who can collect statistical information in an aggregated form on the number of users and how they visit the site.

If, however, the processing of such statistical analyses is entrusted to third parties, the user data must be minimized beforehand and cannot be combined with other processes nor transmitted to further third parties. Under these conditions, the same rules regarding information and consent apply to analytics cookies as to technical cookies. *
